Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is slightly less dense than air. It is toxic to humans and animals when encountered in concentrations above about 35 ppm. Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when we breathe in too much CO. Because of the odorless and tasteless nature of the gas, it’s hard to detect, making it even more dangerous! Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include dizziness, confusion, headaches, and some flu-like symptoms. If exposed to carbon monoxide for too long, severe nerve damage and death can occur. CO detectors, much like smoke detectors, are an incredibly important safety measure in homes, businesses, and other commercial operations to eliminate the risk of poisoning. Always make sure the batteries in the detectors are fully operational and that all rooms in a residence, apartment, or hotel have a detector in them. Most importantly, follow proper safety precautions and never ignore any symptoms of poisoning. Stay safe, stay smart, and be aware!
