Oftentimes, handling tenant disputes means getting to the heart of the problem or miscommunication. When neighbors don’t get along there’s often a misunderstanding at the root of things. It’s the job of a good manager or property owner to first understand the issue occurring between the two (or more) parties. Then you need to facilitate a discussion, where each party can explain their side of the story and air their grievances. However, this should be done in a respectful manner so as not to escalate the problem. You will be in the role of mediator in this discussion, so be sure to take charge. Then you’ll all need to try and find a peaceable solution that works for all parties involved.
The worst thing you can do is let these disputes go unchecked. Don’t be afraid to take some type of action to help your tenants work through their problems with one another. The consequences may be more trouble than they are worth!
