Water Conservation is a must for any hotel, commercial residential property or senior living care facility. Landscaping, kitchen operations and the laundry room are all great places to start your efforts to reduce water usage!
When it comes to landscaping, remember a few simple tips. Only water your lawn and plantings early in the morning or late in the evening, and just for 15 minutes at a time. Watering during peak sun times only increases the rate of evaporation. Also, use mulches to keep weeds down and retain moisture, and use native plantings in your design for maximum plant productivity in your climate.
For those facilities with kitchens – make sure your staff is only washing full loads of pre-washed dishes. Encourage awareness about running water only when necessary and defrosting food in refrigerators. Consider installing food pedal operated sinks.
Kitchens and laundry facilities can both benefit from upgrades to ENERGY STAR equipment. As with dishwashing, train your staff to only run full loads of laundry. And start a linen reuse program to educate your guests about your efforts in water conservation.
