Want to reduce water in your restaurant? Restaurants offer many places for water conservation including public restrooms, your kitchen and your dining area.
Starting in the restrooms, switch all sinks to motion sensors, and install low flow toilets and sink aerators. In the dining room, inform your guests that water is served only by request. If you keep your guests informed on your water reduction policy, they will appreciate your efforts to be more sustainable!
In the kitchen, install pedal operated sinks – this will prevent your staff from just leaving the water running. Teach them to pre-wash all dishes, and to only run full loads of dishes through the dishwasher. Encourage staff to turn off water when not in use, and to defrost food in the refrigerator – not under running water.
If you can afford it, upgrade your appliances to ENERGY STAR equipment. This will automatically reduce the amount of water used and lower your water bill over time. Also, make sure to fix leaky faucets and pipe right away – those little leaks are money down the drain and could turn into an expensive problem if not addressed!
